( Full Disclosure: I met a person from the Internet and didn't get stabbed. In fact, it was an awesome experience, and it turns out Doug is genuinely cool and a very nice guy. He found the time to meet me and a buddy in DC for a meal, and he even let us drive his newly imported R32. Thanks, Doug.) (I also ate a burger that was sandwiched in between two grilled cheese sandwiches instead of burger buns, so that was awesome too.)
Doug is going to do a write up on it soon I think, so I’ll be brief: it was awesome. The car is in great shape, it looks great, sounds great, and shifting with your left hand is super weird. I also may have tried to drive away with the hand brake engaged. I was nervous.
To recap, in 2 hours I did the following:
1. Met Doug, Doug was awesome.
2. Ate a burger with grilled cheeses instead of buns, awesome.
3. Drove a JDM R32 in DC, awesome.
No matter how you spin it, that's a great two hours.
BONUS:
Doug just sent me this-

If I had known Doug would be in DC I too would have bribed him with food and then shared stories about Atlanta before driving his R32.

Ya it really was nice!
Also, I'm replying to your FP comment here, because I don't want to get stabbed by crazy FP commenters, but I've also driven a Veyron! About 200 feet, but still!

I get confused between this 'Doug' you have mentioned a few times and the word people mangle up to refer to their dog. I'm guessing Doug is a person since a dog probably isn't driving that car.

Doug, if you're out there: I will let you drive my Honda Civic if you're ever near Flint, Michigan.

Craziest car I've personally driven? A tuned Evo or... well, there was that further tuned Stage II Roush Mustang that I managed to get sideways in the parking lot and walked the keys back to the owner, acknowledging defeat (this was almost 15 years ago, and I had only driven two manual cars at the time, both poorly). I couldn't get the feel for the heavy clutch and the fact that no throttle was needed at parking lot speeds.
(I mean, I've driven a lot of mid range sports cars, but nothing exotic, ever).

Let me tell you my Veyron story. So, I'm at a car wash in Miami called Magic Hands (awesome, suggest it to everyone), and my car is getting washed and there's a line of like 5 or 6 cars to get washed, and a dude pulls up in a white Veyron, and I immediately approach him and I'm like oh dude awesome blah blah, and I was like have you ever driven a GTR (I had a GTR) and he was like "yeah" and then he goes "have you ever driven a Veyron" and I was like lol no obviously not, so then he was want to drive mine and I was fuck yeah, so we got in, I took it down a block, made a u-turn, and brought it back. It was sweet. The guy's name was Jeff, no idea what his last name was, and we never met again lol.

"Thank you for calling Darcars Nissan parts, how may I help you?"
"I need a new key for my Nissan, can you help me?"
"Sure, we can get you a new key. What year and model?"
"It's a 1990 Skyline GT-R."
"Um, sir, uh, I'm...going to have to check on that. Can you hold?"
"Sure!"
(elevator music)
"Um, sir, I checked, and that car was never legally imported to the US. I'm only able to order parts for cars that were sold by Nissan USA."
"BUT WHAT ABOUT... OVERNIGHT PARTS FROM JAPAN? "

Darcars? You must be local!

I live in Wisconsin but I grew up in the small slice of Rockville that has a 20854 zip code. Rockville kids called me a rich kid from Potomac and I'd be like "BUT MY STREET SIGNS ARE BLUE I'M IN ROCKVILLE NOT POTOMAC."
I spent a summer during college selling cars at Darcars 355 Toyota, so Darcars Nissan next door was the first Nissan dealer in DC that popped in to my head.

Tell him that he's going to need brand new suspension everything since he drove in DC.

I'm in DC constantly (3x in the next 8 wks!) but this will probably be the Skyline's only appearance there, sadly. It's a nightmare in DC traffic and I just love my SUV too much.
If you're ever in Philly though...

What is it like shifting with your left hand? I've been looking at a few JDM cars that I can get for reasonable prices (non-GTR R32s, Toyota Sera), but the proposition of relearning manual makes me somewhat nervous.
Also, how many times did you do the wipers when you wanted to use the turn signal?
![]() 04/10/2015 at 18:50 |

Some friends were just in Philly, but I probably won't be there for a bit.
If you make it down to Fredericksburg, VA with any kind of interesting cars, skyline or otherwise, let me know.

Wait- How did you find doug? Why did he let you, a stranger, drive his prized JDMuro GT-R skyline? He'd have no reason to believe you're really macanamera...unless...unless he already knows you in real life. But if that's true...then...THEN-

yeah, I've had an automatic Boxster S, and a base 911, an e36 m3 and an e46 m3. As well a bunch of standard sports cars (most powerful is a modern camaro SS). And some old muscle (gran Torino, a host of old Mustangs, camaro's, etc).

Well, Mikkeller's BLK FST (Black Fist) was fairly crazy, something like 26% ABV and it tasted kind of like... bourbon and booze. I'm still not sure which of the crazy high IBU beers I've had was really the most bitter, Mikkeller's 1000 is of course in the conversation, but to be honest, some of the batches of Palate Wrecker have seemed in the same league. And of course when you are drinking a just shipped, just tapped pour of Dogfish Head's 120, you have the world's hoppiest barleywine, or maybe the world's barley-ist triple IPA?
Heat would have to be the Crime and Punishment duo, but with Punishment, I think, being the worse of the two.
Ingredients? Well, there were the strange ones... like the golden stouts, or the coffee sours, or Founder's Blushing Monk (which you tried recently) which hides the 9.2% ABV behind a mask of raspberry bliss, fooling you into drinking most of that bottle, at which point you wonder who is going to drive you home.
Stone had a collaboration beer which was a Cherry Chocolate Stout which I swear tasted exactly like a boozy stouty cherry cordial. It was amazing.
And then there are the Rogue / Voodoo Donut beers (speaking of, I have had an original, first bottling run, bottle of the Bacon Maple Ale, sitting in my beer fridge for the past three years-ish? I'm waiting for the right victim for that one.).
I don't know... I mean, there are a lot of odd ones, but none that jump out.

I think he's making a joke based on the fact that some very early R32s had some problems with the original oil pumps, they weren't quite durable enough.

I'll ask about the only thing that is even remotely attainable to me at this point in my life: where can I haz grilled cheez cheezburger?
Jealous of the Skyline drive, have lusted over them since the days of Gran Turismo, and then voraciously reading everything I could lay eyes on about them. There's a 2014 GTR in the parking garage of my apartments. The owner has not noticed the hump marks yet, thankfully.

I'm a righty and I feel more comfortable driving with my left hand.
